Florida’s Craig Anderson Puts On Show

vokoun_panthers_getty_400.jpg

Many people may not even know who Craig Anderson is, but what he did last night was amazing. Anderson, Florida’s back-up goalie made 53 saves to blank the New York Islanders.

The Florida Panthers allowed a franchise-record 29 shots in the 2nd period alone, and to make matters worse, Florida actually blocked almost 30 shots in the game, meaning that if they would have gotten through, Anderson would have faced about 80 shots. The record for the most shots in a game by one team is currently held by the Boston Bruins, with 83 shots in 1941.

Although Anderson admits most of the shots were from the outside and not much of a challenge, making 53 saves is spectacular. For most goalies, that is equal to 2 nights worth of work.

What I am really getting at, is that the Panthers need to tighten up defensively, Florida allows on average 33.57 shots per game, 10 more than Detroit who lead the league. If the Panthers played a better defensive game, they might move up in the rankings, considering they clearly have goal-tending that can save them games, with Tomas Vokoun as their starter.
