Play-off Match-ups Decided & Predictions

Ok, so with my extended absence over, the NHL season is also over and the match-ups have been decided.

Eastern Conference

  • (1) Montreal Canadiens vs. (8) Boston Bruins – Montreal is going to take this without too much effort. Sorry Boston, but I don’t think you have a shot. Montreal in 5.
  • (2) Pittsburgh Penguins vs. (7) Ottawa Senators – First of all, could anyone have imagined that the Sens would be seventh in the conference at the end of the season? Because the Senators are the biggest chokers I’ve seen in the NHL, Penguins in 6.
  • (3) Washington Capitals vs. (6) Philadelphia Flyers – I think this is going the best series in the first round. Ovechkin just won’t be happy enough with just making the post-season, he is going to to carry this team through. Washington in 7.
  • (4) New Jersey Devils vs. (5) New York Rangers – Brodeur is going to single-handedly win these series. Sorry Pries, but the Rangers are ‘effed. Jersey in 6.

Western Conference

  • (1) Detroit Red Wings vs. (8) Nashville Predators – The grizzled and experienced Red Wings continue to be the top team in the league, it is unreal. The Red Wings are gonna waltz through the Predators. Wings sweep.
  • (2) San Jose Sharks vs. (7) Calgary Flames – Sorry Flame fans… But the Sharks are going to take this one. It won’t be easy though, the Flames are one of the grittiest teams in the league. Sharks in 7.
  • (3) Minnesota Wild vs. (6) Colorado Avalanche – This is a tough one… I realistically have no idea who is gonna win this one, so I am just gonna pick the Avs because they are my Dad’s team, and they used to be the Nordiques! Avalanche in 6.
  • (4) Anaheim Ducks vs. (5) Dallas Stars – Just because the Ducks finished 4th, doesn’t mean they can’t repeat. They are a better team than they were last year so they have a legit shot. Ducks win in 5.

There… now I just hope that I am right on half of them, because I could see myself screwing it up.

Selanne has signed with the Ducks

teemu-selanne3.jpg

I have two things to say about this Teemu…

a) Where do you find that wicked helmet? Salvation Army?

b) You are effin’ rude… apparently you didn’t take the time to read this.

Yeah, you just had a daughter, great. You were trying to figure out if you had the passion to continue playing, BS. Your selfish, you want another cup, you just don’t want to go through the grind of a season. Hell, if I only ever did half the work, do you know how many accolades I could have gathered by now? I don’t know either, but a lot more than what I have!

The Joke Of The League…

JFJ’s Dream

Ok, so I have been trying to resist writing about them since I started this whole thing, but I don’t think that is possible anymore. Here goes my thoughts on my favourite team… the Leafs.

At this point I don’t quite know what to say about them. I know they aren’t a good team by any stretch of the imagination, but at the same time, they shouldn’t be as bad as they are, yet here we are. Let’s look at the main issues that are being talked about the Leafs lately.

John Ferguson

I’ve never been a fan of him, while I must admit that I was one of those that thought that Quinn had to be let go. Since JFJ has taken over, the Leafs have drafted one, ONE, player in the first round of the draft. I remember a time when John said that he was going to put more money into scouting, so that the team could draft solidly, however, you could spend all the money in the world, if you don’t have any draft picks, it won’t make a difference.

I do think it is time for JFJ to be fired, it should have been done at the beginning of this season, it should have been done when he re-signed the entire team that missed play-offs last season. But realistically, even if the board was to fire JFJ, and bring in someone else, (whether it be on an interim basis, like Cliff Fletcher or not) would that person have enough time to evaluate the team and make positive changes before or at the trade deadline. Speaking of which…

Trade Deadline

It breaks my heart to say it, but Mats has to be traded. I realize that he says he wants to finish his career in Toronto, and as far as I can tell thats still possible. In saying that, if he truly cared about the well-being of the club, he would waive his No-Trade Clause, and get the team some high draft picks, and some solid franchise prospects. What I am thinking, is something around the lines of trading him to Anaheim for Edmonton’s old first round pick, Bobby Ryan, and then the Leafs would also have to take some salary off of the Ducks’ hands. And then, in the off-season, sign Sundin again, for a one year deal, and hope he takes a discount salary.

Other players that I hope would get traded for some young guns are Tucker, Blake, and Kubina. I realize that there are others that I would like to see go, *cough*Raycroft*cough*, but seriously, what team in their right mind would even attempt at taking a chance with him?

Paul Maurice

I like PM, I honestly do. He handles the media well, he has been to the cup finals, he is doing what he can with an under-achieving team. With that being said, if a new GM comes into place and wants to bring in a new coach, go for it.

The Board

I would love to see the Maple Leafs sold, and the board dispersed. Let’s face it, the Teachers’ Pension Fund could care less if the team is winning, as long as it is bringing in money, and it will, they are happy. Same goes with CTV globeMedia, and TD Bank. I think a single owner that is passionate about hockey and loves win would be way better suited to be the owner of this team.

So there, that’s what I think of the Leafs right now, I will go back to trying to forget that I still actually like them.
